After finishing primary school Štefan ČELAN, PhD continued its education at Technical and Chemistry School in Ruše. After he finished the graduate program of Chemical Engineering at the University of Maribor he continued his education at the postgraduate studies as early stage researcher, where he successfully obtained his Masters degree and later also PhD.

He was employed in a rubber company that was part of Agis and later Sava Kranj. He received many awards for successfully developed products and their introduction into the production. He was awarded the Innovator of the year in 1982 and 1985. During his postgraduate studies he worked at University of Maribor, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering as an assistant.

Between 1994 and 2002 he was director of Scientific Research Centre BISTRA in Ptuj that is engaged in application research in the fields of natural and social sciences.

As an innovator he is the owner of several patents, two of them were awarded the silver prize at international fairs in Geneva and Nürnberg. Besides his regular work he devotes much time to different professional associations, where he is active as a member of different boards (Project Management Association, KORIS, FORA, PCMG, Slovenian Chemistry Society, Slovenian Development Council, Society of University Professors in Maribor, movement “Znanost mladini” (Science to the Youth), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, CEDA).
